WHY CAN’T A WOMAN BE MORE LIKE A MAN?
In My Fair Lady Rex Harrison asked this very question in his famous sing/speak style of singing. But what Rex was really asking was, “Why can’t a woman be consistent like a man?” The nature of a woman is to be inconsistent. This is a huge problem for men. A man can count on a handful of things about his woman, yes. But even the things you can count on, you can’t even count on. Men, on the other hand, are consistent to a fault. But predictability has its advantages—if not always its charms—because women can easily gain knowledge about us through our repeated behaviors. We have no such advantage with them! They’re wild cards just about every time. With a women, every time is, as the method actors like to say, “as if for the first time.” Which keeps things fresh, sure, but it’s also like dealing with someone with Alzheimer’s. What came before doesn’t matter. Even a minute before! A woman can switch up on you and change her personality completely in a manner of seconds. You can take the trash out and come back to find a completely different woman from the one you left! Men are the same day in, day out—boring perhaps, monotonous even, mind-numbing in our sameness. But there’s a key that fits to our lock and we’ve given you multiple copies of it for safekeeping.
Women are, perhaps, more complex emotionally—which they all seem to take as a good thing. (I’m not so sure.) And they are able to empathize more easily because of an innate ability to see two sides of any situation. (Even when there’s only one.) But the gulf between what is and what was five minutes ago, between what is said and what is meant, and between what is seemingly agreed upon and then silently rescinded often seems too big a divide to conquer. As a man I often wonder: How do they expect us to know what is essentially unknowable?
And yet, they do.
